About this place
On the 1nd floor of the Kezuka Building south of Otsuka Station, Kyo Chiso Iwafune is an understated soba destination known for crisp seiro noodles and an extensive list of sobamae—small dishes enjoyed alongside drinks. Counter and table seats are set comfortably throughout the dining room, providing a calm traditional atmosphere.
Seasonal Small Plates to Savor over Sake
The experience begins as soon as you sit down with complimentary fried soba crisps to nibble on while perusing the menu. For those looking to sample several small bites, the customizable three-piece and six-piece Chiso assortments are ideal. Options range from deep savory flavors like smoked cod roe, salted sea bream entrails, smoked tofu, and fermented tofu yo to soba-shop staples including grilled miso, itawasa fish cake, and Kyoto fresh yuba sashimi. The drink menu features junmai sake and seasonal limited releases, with tasting flights of 2 selections and fragrant sobayu-wari shochu diluted with hot buckwheat cooking water.
Chilled Seiro Noodles and Dashi-Rich Hot Soba
For lunch or as a finishing course, the firm, smooth seiro noodles are the main draw. Thoughtful portion options include lighter "thin servings" and extra refill baskets. Tempura combinations like the seasonal vegetable and prawn ten-seiro or fragrant sakura shrimp kakiage seiro remain popular. Warm bowls such as charred scallion negi soba, lightly broiled local chicken jidori nanban, and rich duck kamo nanban highlight the balance between house-made dashi broth and seasoned kaeshi.
Because the restaurant draws a steady stream of diners day and night, reservations are recommended for evening visits. To end your meal, traditional sweets like sobagaki shiruko or shiratama cream zenzai offer a refined, gentle finish.
